Building project with son

Hi Guys,

I'm new here so firstly hello, I need a bit of advice. I was moving the boxes of assorted junk in the spare room to be able to put the tree back when I found the computer bits box. So I am wondering obviously I will need more bits but is it worth trying to build something from this stuff as a project with my son?
I have a psu, a processor a heat sink that might go with it? Probably a graphics card, a dvd drive, one fan some memory, several hdds and just enough knowledge to be able to think how hard can it be, which is probably bad. Most obviously I am missing a motherboard and some sort of case and the knowledge that any if this stuff is actually compatible with the rest.

So am I mad to even consider this and if not where do I start (by properly identifying the bits I guess)?

Thanks for the help in advance

I'd give it a go. Google the components you've got to see details about what's compatible (look for product numbers etc) then see what else you need. It also depends on how old some of it is. Worst case is you need to buy pretty much everything from ebay second hand and it comes to like £200-£300 but you'd have a lot of fun giving it a go

Have you any idea how long the stuff has been stored so to get an idea how old some of it might be? What is the processor? an intel or is it really ancient liks a Cyrix?

Well all i have to say is this,

As long as you have enough time to research etc,

For instant what socket is the processor or what is the processor called?

Is the ram ddr3 or 4 etc,etc,etc?

Just to make sure it is indeed compatible.

Dan.

P.s. You can get a decent enough gaming pc (tower only) for around about £500 quid, maybe using those spare parts like graphics card to keep costs lower.

Thanks all i will have a proper look at what I have the bit I am struggling most with is the processor if I post a pic can anyone tell me what it is or how to work it out

Graphics card is an Asus ENGTX550
There are 2x 4GB 1600mHz DDR3 I think
A xfx 8o plus bronze psu
180GB in ssd drives
and a corsair H60

hmmm...not a bad bunch of items to have.
just get yourself an am3+ board and you're potentially rocking a decent computer!

It'll be a decent little 1080p rig.

You'll need an operating system, a motherboard, and probably a proper games disk as it sounds like the SSDs are small capacity. Sounds like you'll need a case too, got any fans? And what about monitor and peripherals?

With a proper list of parts I'm sure we could price the rest up for you.

For very little cash you could have a nice little rig. This could be a cracking long term product for you and the boy as you could later upgrade bits from the MM here.

I'm quite jealous, the step-son is an apple freak :(

And the processor is a amd fx-6100

Yes get a am3+ motherboard.

A atx or matx pc case one that can or could fit the corsair h60

A Cd/dvd drive.

Maybe sata cables,

Maybe a cpu cooler.

And your set to go for under £100-150 at best.

Hopefully the power supply would be up for the job.

I have an itch to recommend a gpu as the gtx 550 isn't that powerful nowadays, maybe at least a gtx 1050 non ti version.

Sorry mate, not sure where you're coming from? I was saying it would be a nice long term project, and he had a cost effective upgrade path for the future?
Ah, no I just meant he needs >1k posts, and only just starting out. But a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step :p
