Building to a budget - Haswell or Skylake?

I'm building to a budget at the moment and I had been looking at getting a 6600K. Someone suggested getting a 4690K instead. They said I could even overclock this on some H97 mobos. Even just using the stock intel cooler. I'm not intending to up the voltage either way, so happy with a modest overclock.

Is this this something I should consider. From looking at prices, getting the 4690K means I might be able to squeeze an SSD into the build.

For what, gaming? If it's between 6600K + HDD or 4690K + SSD then there's only one option (the SSD).

I'd probably even recommend an i3 + SSD over a 6600K + HDD.

Why don't you want to up the volts? It's safe to do it within reason. You also get a warranty and no one knows you have done it.

If you don't want to overclock at all you can save more money by getting a non K version

I had been intending to avoid upping the voltage as I will be putting a fairly cheap cooling setup in place.

I could I suppose stick with the 6600K, not overclock it and just get an H110 mobo?

Go for the 6600k if buying new. If you can get a good deal on a second hand haswell setup it might be worth it. But you have an upgrade oath to kabylake from a z170 board and more modern io

I've decided to go for a 6600 (non K) with a H170 mobo.

I can squeeze a 240GB Samsung 850 into the build with that.

Extra cost for a more expensive mobo, CPU and the additional cost of a cooler was just pushing things up too much.

Just out of interest, how much is that setting you back? Reason I ask is because my overclockable haswell setup costs:

retail 4690K £177
Z97-D3H £70 (cheap and has intel lan and better onboard sound than other boards in this price range)
Raijinktek themis cooler £20 (£18 on TWO)

As you can see in my sig, this is giving an easy 4.5GHz without me even trying.

**prices checked just now. Board and CPU bought elsewhere - only the cooler is from OcUK

For just the CPU and Mobo it comes in about £20 shy of the prices you have quoted. (That is using the stock cooler with a retail 6600)
