Just saw a thread on here suggesting you can do it

But is it worth it - are the costs of buying the latest processors and other components simply too high?

Just looking for experiences.

I have done this in the first generation Centrino days. I managed to save money and get a better spec by buying a brand new barebones laptop (A-Open Barebook) and finding the CPU on ebay. Other than that I did not make a whole lot of saving overall. There are some good Clevo barebones laptops available now though and you could search for a second hand CPU and add up the cost of the memory etc and compare it with an equivalent spec off the shelf laptop. If you buy the components new I am sure it will cost you more...
