Random question but...

Just wondering whether this would be at all possible?

After all, we can build PC's easily enough. Surely the parts in TV's can be bought individually and put together, no?

crt tv's have a vacuum (i probably spelled that wrong) and that would be pretty hard to make.

and then theres 3 the ion guns or what ever they are called targeting every single pixel.... and then theres the hassle of calibrating them right with the screen eg 3 primary colours hitting the screen and combinations of them to produce different colours.

seems impossible tbh

I suppose, but really TV's are all in one systems I would imagine, rather than separate parts that can all work together like PC's, LG/Sony/Samsung probably use their own specific circuitry which I'm guessing will make it difficult to mix and match, if possible at all.

depends on the kind really.

But in an lcd for example the parts are so integrated the best you could do would be putting a panel + control board, into your own case/back lighter even then it wouldn't be that good because it wouldn't be calibrated properly.

If your the kind of person who mods their mobo's or builds thier own gfx cards then probbably other wise nah.

can make yourself a projector out of a tft panel and an overhead projector (like in schools the ones with the transparent sheets)

YEs you build a PC, but you dont buuld the moitor do you... thats bought as a single component. Making TVs requires specialised technologies, and I also dont think most of the components to aither a CRT or TFT TV are available to joe public.

Seems a bit silly though, for the amount of people who own a TV worldwide. You would think they'd be abit more user friendly in terms of construction.

think how many people own gfx cards, how many solder their own chips same for mobos, no point in making thing more complex than needs be + your homemade tv would almost always be inferior.

What would the benefits be?

A point id also like to know..

I know its expensive for a HD LCD/Plasma TV nowadays but come on... the parts alone would be expensive, and it would be exteremely hard to fit together..

Id rather buy one that works fine :)

What the are benefits of building your pc?

Cheaper, satisfying, built to your own spec, etc.

I don't know about other people, but my main PC certainly wasn't cheaper. Just a heck of a lot cooler :D

How do you build a TV to your own 'spec' though. You're pretty much limited by the screen. It's not like it's worth adding water-cooling, LED lights, overclocking etc.

If your building something, you buy the components. I think a TV or monitor counts as its own individual component in its own right. It can be bought to the size and specification you want to provide the best performance in a system, be it TV, Gaming or PC setup. Its a component you can buy, but not make, in the same way as buying a CPU, or cooler, or Freeview tuner. The TV is a component in a TV setup.

problem is a lcd generally consists of panel + control board (these have to be attached as theres no way you could do it at home/have a connector non factory made.)

Then it's just a back light and case really not much you can change.

A crt theres no way in hell you could calibrate an electron gun at home.

Best thing is look up the different types of panel and what models they in and find the one you like.

Or you coul make your own case.

how can you build your own spec tv, theres not much between them.
Its hardly going to be cheaper either, they are already quite cheap.
