Built in webcam - how do I get it to work?

Hello. I've just bought a new laptop with a built in webcam. However, searching throught the hard drive, I can find no mention of it. The keyboard has a blue 'fn' key link to it which makes a little green light come on (the first time I pressed this the computer went through some sort of installation process); I assume that's the on light for the webcam. That's as far as I can get. Am I missing something? Do I need some extra software? I had hoped to use the webcam to record some video messages and for video conferencing or phone calls. Any help (to what is perhaps a ludicrously basic question) will be greatly appreciated.

You should probably say which laptop you have.

Anyway, on my Dell Vostro 1700 there is an icon on the task bar that i can click to start the webcam. Failing that, just reinstall the webcam software.
