Bulldog 16mb ADSL

From what I've gathered, the speed regrade isnt automatic, there is a £20-£30 one-off charge and then its an extra £5 a month on your subscription (plus I've a feeling it might lock you in to a longer contract)

Total monthly cost £35.00/mth

well if you're on inter@ctive, 1 month contract, upgrade to 16megs then u'll be placed on new 12 months contract therefore you're new customer, i upgraded last night and was told the upgrade will be completed in 24 to 48hrs! i wont keep my hope too high thou

Typical Bulldog - never sing from the same hymnsheet.
Although you're entering a new 12 month contract, you will still be treated as an existing customer. Doubt very much if you'll get it before June to be honest.
Best way of getting their 'double speed' earlier is to order a new line for a quid and if you're existing line is a monthly contract then just cancel that one once you have your new double speed connection. Means that you'll have to change your tel. number though.

So how do you find out just how fast you can go?

Depends on your Line Att and Snr etc.

Would I be right in thinking that even if I didnt see much improvements speed wise by going to ADSL2+ I might have a more stable connection?

At the moment my connection is constantly re-syncing at lower speeds untill it gets right down to less that 1mbit, then when I reboot the router it goes back up to around 5mbit and starts going down again!

Im considering getting A Belkin 7633 Router as Ive heard good things about them with bulldog. Then upgrading to the 16Meg service.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Post your line stats (SNR, Attenuation). Can give you a better idea then.
If your line is such that it sometimes resyncs at 1Mbit then either you are quite far from the exchange and therefore won't benefit from ADSL2+ or that there is interference on your line causing your snr to be lower than it could be. Try plugging your router/modem into the test socket and see how or whether your connection improves.
One benefit with ADSL2+ in the future will be the implementation of SRA (Seamless Rate Adaptation) which will prevent you from disconnecting. It will allow your sync speed to change (depending on your snr) on the fly without dropping the connection

As you may have read on ADSLguide, the Belkin 7633 performs admirably on Bulldog connections. It also supports SRA with the current firmware. I have one myself and my sync speeds have improved and i get less dropped connections but it will be pot luck whether you see major improvements in this regard with your line quality. I know a general consensus on these forums is that Belkin is a poor brand when it comes to routers but i have no issues at all apart from the wireless speed only being at 54Mbps. Their customer support is atrocious but hopefully, as it is for myself, it will be just a case of plug and play without any issues.

Anyhow, post your stats and we'll be able to give you more of an estimate of how and whether you will benefit from ADSL2+.

looks like I might get a nice boost then:

Current:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8064 kbps / 576 kbps
Line Attenuation 23 db / 6.5 db
Noise Margin 9 db / 22 db

You sure will m8!!
Only consideration is what SNR profile Bulldog sets for customers to sync at.
Be use a variety depending on customer circumstances and knowing Bulldog's arrangements with current ADSL, you should be able to call up and get it changed depending on how stable your connection is ie how wildly your snr fluctuates esp. in the evening/early hours.

With my Netgear DG834GT I can Telnet into the router and change the SNR. By doing this I have improved my sync from about 6500 to about 7200 giving an increase in download speed. By trial and error I have found my connection to be stable with an SNR of around the 7db mark. Any lower still gives a higher sync rate but a decrease in overall download speed. rebooting the router restores the default SNR of about 10db.

Thanks for taking the time to reply mate, it was fine for months up until recently so maybe there is some interference on the line like you suggested.

Anyway let me know what you can from them stats...Cheers
