my friend has bulldog broadband and a standard adsl modem which she uses with her laptop. to set her up with wifi (laptop has it) do i need to get a new wifi adsl modem/router and replace the standard wired one she has or can you get some wifi enabling device that is cheaper and just connects to the modem she has? i don't have much experience with adsl (im with telewest) or wifi so i don't want to make her spend more cash than she has too as a decent wifi modem seems to cost about 60 quid.

thanks in advance guys.

standard adsl modem

you need to elaborate on the details.... :p if it's usb then you'll definitely need to ditch it and get a router/modem/wireless all in one job.

even if it's ethernet, you could theoretically get a wireless access point to connect to it but the price difference between one of those and a new all in one as above isn't that much different anyway. :)

thx for the quick reply mate.

pretty sure its ethernet. i thought i'd see if there was a cheap way of doing it as she is a student.

Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall (NW-017-NG) - Total £64.04

this one seems okay what do you think?

We have the DG834G V2 dishing out our 8meg Bulldog just fine, I'd attempt to check with OcUK that it is the V2 that they sell though, as the picture on the site is of the older one.

That should sort you out nicely

erm, no you cant. You need to attach a cable router to it with an ethernet WAN port.

But chances are you don't have an ethernet modem so i'd go for something along the lines of a WAG54GS. or WAG54Gv2.
