Bulldozer hotfix release by Microsoft

This will be interesting!

Look forward to truthfull results aswell.

I hope it works for the sake of some good competition, Intel are running away at the mo.

They are now saying they have taken the hotfix down?!

Maybe it didn't work or not as good as thought.

Ya have to love it when a plan comes together!

An OS update isn't going to fix problems in the implementation of the processor. It might help offset some of the poor performance, but that's all it can do.

I'm waiting to see what they do with the next generation processors (although am considering a cheap build around an A8-3870K, just not the current version of bulldozer). I used to be a big AMD fan, and hope they can recover from all the recent setbacks and changes.

Of course, a lot of this will be forgotten in a couple of weeks, when we've all installed the latest and greatest AMD graphics cards from our christmas stockings :D

i saw a great wee film yesterday called little deaths. wow ! how sick is that:p

anyway i fitted my new bulldozer with the amd cooler and promptly crashed. my OS hasn't been the same since and i will have to re install windows. when fitting the cpu i saw the tin had a bash in it. i also saw the plastic box had a corner bent down, this means the cpu was at least opened, and was returned to the vendor. i never noticed the top of the cpu had a small rag of metal poking up therefore the cooler was never going to seat properly, hence it must've overheated and crashed. so i'm going to return it maybe. even though i dressed it up a bit, maybe once i reinstall windows see how it performs. the temps look too high at 49 centigrade with 30 percent usage.

I can't see it helping a great deal where it matters, Bulldozer's big achilles heel is single thread performance not multithreaded which this fix is aimed at.

EDIT: The OP's link has results up with some quite surprising results.

Update: VR-Zone reports (and we can confirm) that the download link for the hotfix is no longer functional. There were apparently unexpected performance drops in some cases after applying the hotfix and Microsoft is investigating the issues. Modifying the scheduler in Windows is not something to be done lightly, as it changes a core element of the OS, so more testing and validation for such updates is always a good idea.

CONCLUSION (edited_:
Great for gaming. It’s a free patch, and the results go from barely seen to solid gains. For those of you who have a BD, it’s a bloody MUST.

EDIT: It's a tradeoff. Some things turned out slower, like winRAR.

For those of you who don’t have a BD… well, it’s a cool patch, but shouldn’t be enough of an impact to make a decision of getting one or not, I believe.

Microsoft Releases AMD Bulldozer Patch by Mistake: Incomplete Update

This is the download a lot of users of AMD FX and Opteron 6200 Series processors are expecting. The problem between Microsoft and AMD appeared when AMD launched its desktop and server processors based on the Bulldozer architecture. The processors are specifically optimized for Windows 8 task scheduler, but the Task Schedulers for Windows XP, Vista and current Windows 7-based operating systems just cannot take full advantage of the Bulldozer architecture.

This naturally resulted in lower performance scores. To fix the situation, Microsoft released the afore mentioned KB2592546 patch which describes itself as:

"An update that optimizes the performance of AMD Bulldozer CPUs that are used by Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computers. Currently, the performance of AMD Bulldozer CPUs is slower than expected. This behavior occurs because the threading logic in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 is not optimized to use the Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) scheduling feature. This feature was introduced in the Bulldozer family of AMD CPUs. "

However, less than 24 hours after introduction, Microsoft pulled the patch. We contacted AMD and Microsoft and received an answer from AMD first. For starters, AMD was surprised that Microsoft decided to post the patch in its current form, because:

"there are actually two updates needed for AMD Bulldozer CPU architecture. Microsoft posted just the first patch and we do not believe users would benefit in any way from it. The patch was originally scheduled for the first quarter 2012 and then the users will see tangible performance benefits when using Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems."

There you have it folks, Microsoft jumped the gun and released an incomplete update. We've been told that the official statements regarding this patch will be released by both AMD and Microsoft in due course.

better than nothing, ill take a 1-10% boost from a free software update alone. Hopefully a B3 rev of bulldozer is out about then and fixes power comsumption at high clocks. Maybe a few tweaks to the silicon to get a few % more boost maybe wishfull thinking but glass half full than half empty.

the point was this hotfix gives the same or similar boost to window 8. and 2-10% boost isn't enough to beat a 1100t clock for clock in most things.
