Hi,

Whats the most bulletproof, indestructable linux os out there? that is fully compatible with my macbook (june 2008 model). been using arch/ubuntu on my desktop so i know I am capable of installing arch!

Basically all im concerned about is doing an update halfway through my PGCE and the macbook goes mental and I lose my data....

is arch the only way? just want bulletproof stability with proven support for macbooks.

OS X is doing me head in :)

Arch is rolling release so it's not known for stabillity. You will do a update and X won't boot for example.

Debian is know for stabillity, but it doesnt release that often.

OS X is pretty stable though, I use macports for linuxy/unixy needs since i'm a terminal junky.

I currently use arch, but have had update problems in the past.

yeh now found a guide for debian on the macbook, I just aint enjoying OSX as i thought i would.

I like arch, but as im a semi-nooblet (linux/windows dualbooter since 2005) I dont wanna risk it fudging up half way though my course.

Debian - is it a rolling release also? Is it gonna be bulletproof? I just want something where I can run openoffice, gimp, e-mail. I know its hard to predict whats gonna happen but i just dont wanna do apt-get update one day & it all dies lol

Arch isn't that stable really- I've lost X a few times thanks to updates... I considered using it on my work lappy, but being stuck in South Africa or Qatar with a non- booting laptop just doesn't work for me... It's great for my home system where it doesn't matter if I fudge it up though :)

what are you using bes?

As I said before, Arch at home. Fine for home use, but no good for work... Just too risky!

Work I run Windows XP for now... I am considering a switch to Debian though.

i'm gonna look at debian 5.0, but after finding shed loads of info on the ubuntu wiki about ubuntu and macbooks, I think i'll try trusty ubuntu first.

What is it about OSX you dislike so much?

I prefer the gnome desktop. By that I mean I dislike the way finder works, opening up windows when all i want to do is select my item from a dropdown menu. Also dont like the os x dock, would rather have the gnome bottom panel where I can simply click the window i want to bring to the front. Also dislike the way os x puts minimixed windows into the dock, if u have a lot of them its hard to tell which is which.
