Anybody had any experience of having a bumper repaired?

Had a small reversing accident and its popped the rear bumper out on the left hand side.

Also a small crack at the same corner.

The bits that popped out seem to have damaged some of the fittings.

Seen some places that do plastic welding etc but not sure what sort of results to expect.

Buying a new bumper isn't an option at the moment but would like to get this sorted ASAP if its possible.

Well you can probably pop it back in, mine got buckled and it was a 2 man job for one person to push it down and one person to push it so it clicks back in. Don't worry about breaking it, its surprisingly strong.

Duct tape!!

That's what i've done with my front bumper. Thankfully my car is silver and so is the tape so it matches :p

Can't have a Mondeo without duct tape ;)

Been out and about this morning and got 2 quotes.

One for £150 and the other between £150 and 200.

Seems they are a pain to fix but it should be almost as good as new once its done.

If I duct tape it my car would almost have an ear. ;)

Thats not too bad. I had mine done recently (picked it up yesterday). Mine was pretty bad as it had a 6 inch crack in the bottom of it that had been badly repaired before I brought it and it also had about 9 million stone chips.

It looks absolutely brand new and fantastic now and I paid around 150 for that at a local place?

The one of the retaining clips on mine is broken, leading to the sharp point by above the rear wheel arch protruding a tab - but Ford said it would be a new bumper as the clip is broken on the bumper and not the wheel arch. Haven't bothered as it is such a small defect that just can't be seen.

Broken plastic lugs and brackets can often be repaired using a product called Superfast and that goes for bumpers, headlight lugs etc. I know the 3M kit has a flexible patch to go on the back much like a sound deadening pad, then the front of the repair is filled in with a flexible plastic repair material which is then sanded into shape and painted. That particular kit is recommended for cracks anywhere up to 15cm long. Obviously not everything can be repaired dependant upon where the crach is and access to the rear. Holes can also be done in the same way. Plastic welding is a bit more old fashioned but still used.

These days insurance companies encourage bodyshops to repair rather than replace so it is a lot more common to see it done now than it was before.

@daveydave - Sounds like the damage on yours is similiar to what I had repaired.

Got it back today after the repair work was carried out.

Cost £180 but there is now no sign whatsoever of the damage I had done.

Guy at the garage done a great job.

If anything else happens before payday I reckon it'll be duct tape all the way though ;)

I'll take a picture in the morning and post for you to assess.
