Dear OCuk hivemind,
I'm looking to do a quick upgrade of my system - just the CPU, motherboard and RAM. The reasons for upgrading are mainly to get SATA-III and USB 3.0 support, plus a boost in speed would be a nice bonus.
I'm upgrading from:
- Intel i7-920
- 6GB Corsair RAM
- ASUS P6T-SE motherboard
The rest of my system is as follows:
- Crucial M4 SSD + 3TB 7,200RPM HDD
- Asus ATI Radeon HD 6950 graphics card
- Sound Blaster Fatal1ty sound card
- Linksys Dual-band 802.11n WiFi card
- Corsair 620W modular PSU (from around 2007)
- SATA-based DVD drive
- Windows 8
So I'll need a motherboard with at least two PCI-Express slots (graphics + sound cards) and a PCI slot for the WiFi card.
My last motherboard was an ASUS that came with software for controlling voltage/fan speeds automatically depending on the system load. I assume that this is fairly standard these days? I like how quiet my current system is when it's being used for web browsing and other light tasks. Quiet under normal conditions is definitely a priority for me!
So with all this in mind, what do people recommend?
Thanks.
