Hey, just need alittle help with your wisdom about temps :) ive read a few threads and believe my temps are alittle high and wondered if my pc is stable.

Running Vista 64Bit and believe i have all up to date drivers.
OC Asus Rampage 2 Bundle @ 3.8 GHz ((CPUz and BIOs says its 4009.5GHz) Core voltage: 1.28)
Corsair HX850w
BFG nVidea 285
Antec 1200 Case (when testing all fans on full)
Megahalem with 1 fan directed at rear computer fans

When i built my pc (1week ago) i did everything but the thermal paste and applying the heatsink. since i never did it before my friend did it. he applied 3 lines of paste, west, north, east of the cpu and used cardboard to move it to the center and smooth it all out. i didnt think he used to much but then im rather inexperienced at thermal paste (did it once and it was like inch thick icing on a cake).

Idel temps = 42-46
Prime temps = 79-88(AVG 84-86)
IBT = 77 - 80

Tests Done:
Prime:
Blind test, failed, worker #2 stopped working after failing on rounding. highest temp was 86c on 2 cores.
Large FFTs manually stopped after 8 Hours, passed, temps peaked 88 on 2 cores and 84 on 2 others.
Large FTT Manually stopped after 7 Hours Passed, Temps peaked 89 on 1 core 86 on the rest.
Large FFT BSOD over night, i went to run it for 24 hours, Temps peaked 88 but everytime i checked they were hovering around 84-86.(i know it went passed 11-12hours but i had to do the whole human sleeping thing so dont know when it failed)

IBT:
Stanard and High with 8 threads all passes, temps peaked 80c
Max failed at 8 Threads temp peaked at 80
Max with threads @ Auto passed temps peaked at 80

Using CPUz to get CPU info and Cpre temp 64bit for temps. PC is in my bedroom (student house) and is of nice size, i normally have the window open for testing(however with the 24 hour test i was doing i shut the window and well... slept to wake up in the most comfy quite toasty room ever but with a BSOD :( perhaps the PC just got too hot?)

After the testing and unhappily getting few fails thought id beg for your wisdom :) i normally just lurk and read forums from afar for help but this time if you could answer a few questions would be great.

1) The temps - i know they're high, is it due to the way my friend applied the thermal paste? if so any good way of removing the paste other than using brute force with a credit card?
2)Ill be buying another fan for the CPU (akasa apache) for a push/pull method, how much will this help?
3) looking at BIOS and CPUz info it suggests my CPU is 4GHz, since i only paid for 3.8 and not fussed about the 0.2 GHz would lowing the overclock be a good idea? if so any tips (or is there a OCUK 3.8OC profile i could use?

Any other info would be grand, i havent been able to give my PC my full attention since the build due to uni exams but a month now till 3rd year starts im eager to get this working perfect before then. The PC is used for low detail rendering, Coding, Photoshop, movies and of games :)

p.s. When researchng if it was stable and how to check everyone said prime 95 which i used(and Intel burn test) but no one explicitly said what torture test so i decided Large FTT was the one due to it does Max head and power test thingy. silly question is this the right one?

p.s.s i forgot to ad, after a hard days revision ive been gaming quite abit Trine, Porotype, COD4 single/mult and all on max detail and been running perfect. windows boots in 40-50 seconds(well the windows loading is very fast just a slight hang on the BIOs at start up). Its purely the long term stability issues im wondering about but everything thing seams to be working very well :)

Thanks for the help, much appreciated :) looks like ill re do the TIM once i get round to buying the extra CPU fan :)

If i am unfortunate enough to have a slightly warmer than average i7 would there be a way to get the 3.8 OC settings? another note, how long is the guarantee on the bundles itself?
