Here is my thoughts on it and MS's thought process:
- E3 is all about getting press coverage.
- MS had a good show planned but were not sure what everybody else was going to do.
- Because MS were first, they got the attention first but didn't want the others from stealing all of it, so they planned to unveil something after all the conferences (as shown by Bungie's teaser and countdown on web site).
- They probably got wind of what everybody else had up their sleeve and decided not to show their hand. (canceled the new Halo at the last minute)
Personally, I am sure the guys at Bungie are ****** off, but I think it is wise. I hate seeing super early teaser trailers with nothing to back it up. Also, it might be a little odd if MS showed two Halo games in the one conference. They are clearly trying to show the world that they have more than just Halo, and wanted people to remember Fable 2, "Lips", GoW2, FF XIII etc. If they announced another Halo game, it would detract from the others, and there is no real need.
Besides, sure a dedicated event to show it off would be better, or at least give Bungie a little more time to work on it, get something more to show etc.
Just my 2p.
