My in-laws were broke into a few years ago. The thieves put grow bags by the patio door catch the breaking glass and smashed the door.. When they got home after being alerted you could see the four footprints into the room from the grow bag they trod in and at that point the alarm went of and they left empty handed.

Exactly, they are not going to hang around with an alarm going off. Regardless of whether people take any notice. If burglars came to 2 houses, 1 with alarm and 1 without, then more than likely they will go to the one without.
Just put a dummy one up then and save a head of money.
Im going the route of CCTV, rather catch the scum than just scare them off.
Or both alarm and CCTV.

Yes, that way you can see the colour of the burglars hoodie as they ransack your house.
Pull the power on the unit inside, unplug the battery, the sounder outside will be going off but will eventually die when the battery in that goes flat (or go up a ladder and remove cover and then battery).
The risk just isn't high enough for the hassle of an alarm. Burglary doesn't even make it on the list of crimes for our postcode.
Didn't stop my house getting burgled.
