Our kettle in the kitchen broke, so at the moment we have to boil water using pans. Me being the fool I am turned on the hotplate with my mates pan on (with nothing in), leaving my pan of cold water on a cold plate. Thinking, hmm, this isn't boiling, I leave it there for a while. 15-20 minutes later, i realise i have the wrong plate on:

I've managed to scrape it off the plate, but there's a foul smell coming from the kitchen now. I have no idea if the fumes are bad for you or just stink? I think its from a copper plated pan, i'm not sure.

Should we stay out the kitchen until the fan sucks all the fumes out???

Oh dear.... whats your mate said?
He just got back from the library, and for a change he was lost for words! On any other day he'd have ripped my head off no doubt. :(

Doh! I think you may need an injection of common sense
That could be quite dangerous ;)

I think the bottom of the pan remained intact, but the lower sides are what melted.

I don't know wether to blame the light head-ness on just waking up, or for the fumes

Considering all the silver crap that fell came off, the pan is relatively normal and solid. But i'm guessing its a bit of a safety hazard to use it again.

Happens all the time with those damn plates because you can't tell if they are on, amount of times I have left an oven glove or somthing on them at work is untrue.

Gordon Bennett! WTF was that pan made from? Shiny plastic?

The only common metals that'll melt on a stove are tin and lead (solder and pewter being alloys of these) Definitely recommend NOT breathing in the fumes just in case.
