Burning smell from PSU

I've got a Cooler Master extreme Power 550W, no more than 2 years old. Started to develop a fairly strong burning smell in the last few days during operation.

I'm pretty sure that's not a good thing, and more than likely suggests the PSU is on the way out.

Anyone have experience of these particular PSU's? Should they last longer than this?

Advice appreciated.

If it's definately the psu then stop using it before it blows and possibly takes somthing with it. Take it out and see if you can see anything amiss through the fan slot. If it smells of burning though i would be looking for a replacement.

Thanks for the replies, chaps.

It's free from dust and I can't see anything particularly obvious that might be wrong with it. But then I'm no great expert when it comes to PSU internals.

I've been building PC's for 10 years and this is the first time I've had a PSU begin to spontaneously self combust.

Just checked the Cooler Master website and this unit has a 100,000 hour guarantee so I'll get on to them about it.

As per the other replies, you're best swapping it out A.S.A.P. - if it does blow, your 100,000 hour guarantee might replace it but it could be a bit more awkward if it takes the mobo etc. with it.

Not to mention the fire hazard - any electrical stuff that smells, get it physically unplugged from the mains before you leave it alone in a room!

Thanks again guys. Always such a helpful bunch here. :)

Taken it out and replaced it with a fanless Silverstone unit I've had knocking around. It'll do for the time being.

My corsair develoepd a burning smell last week. RMA'd it before it took something more expensive out and it was found to be faulty, Definately not right though so best replace before it takes something else out!
