Hey all,

before I start i better say i've got my own Windows XP home serial code which I purchased legally

soo.. following on from advice from someone on these here forums I downloaded the Windows XP home files from the internet.

BUT now ive got them, how the hell do I burn it?

it came in something like 15 X .rar files each one with 533mb ISO files in them... so how does this work?

Instructions just sau 'unrar and burn'

Cheers.

ps. I dont think this is breaking any forum rules since I do techically own XP, but if I am, please lemme know.

EDIT

is it possible that opening 1 rar would actually open all of 20 of them? so they split it up to make corrupted files easier to replace?

Download a trial copy of winrar and extract the file. You can do this by right clicking on any of the .rar files and clicking "Extract here". Assuming nothing is corrupt, you'll then have one 533mb ISO file which needs to be burnt to disc using nero/alcohol120. I'm sure there are free cd burning programs others can suggest.

I think you normally have to open the first one to extract the spanned rar file. Depends on the way it was rar'd (Sounds so much better saying zipped)

Nah, you can right click and extract from any of them (well the first 29 files as these have file associations by default). Winrar is clever :p :D

You might as well download any recent updates and slipstream them into your ISO while you're at it. There's a site somewhere with a guy offering up-to-date collections of all recent updates but I don't have the URL handy.

Using NLite (google it) you can even slipstream drivers and other applications (very handy if you need SATA drivers but don't have a floppy drive).

Multiple rar files are split that way so if you ever get a corrupt file you can simply download the one part again without the need to download the whole thing, if you know what i mean.....

Not sure even if you do own a serial its legit to download a copy of XP..... all the same though, as said, install winrar and just right click any of the .r01, .r02 or whatever files and choose extract here. I'd assume you'll then have just an ISO or BIN/CUE file, which is just a CD image, Nero or equivalent should be able to burn it.... ;)

Nlite is the popular way to create a slipstreamed disk, but there are other methods...

Google "slipstream XP"......

Ah okay thanks guys, ive burnt it onto a CD but it wont work when I choose boot from CD =/

I get a "GENERAL PROTECTION FAILURE" error in the BIOS after "Hit any key to boot from CD. Any ideas?

cheers.

Sorry I gotta bump this, really annoying me!

Should I try re-burning the ISO? I tried it on my sisters laptop but it just hung on press a key to boot from CD...

` Download the 15 Rar files
` Extract the ISO file from the 15 Rars
` Download Nero 6/7 and create a boot disc
` Don't burn at highest speed as this can corrupt files.
` Boot up your PC and install
