Burnout Paradise (ps3) - How to access multiplayer?

Okay, so being a bit of a n00b when it comes to this console business, and was expecting to see a multiplayer option on the main menu for this game.

There isn't one, so how do you get online?

Press right on the d-pad when in game.

You only have to load once, just go into the single player game and use the in-game menu (on the 360 it was the D-PAD IIRC) to join other freeroam sessions, the screen should flash/zoom in on your car for 2-3 seconds and you'll be in multiplayer mode. The host can the select an event/race/challenge etc.

I found it really confusing too having just got it bundled with my Xbox. Is the objective just to roam round the map doing stunt jumps, setting new race times, etc etc?

That's a part of it! The host should start challenges where you're tasked with something specific to do.
