Ok.. weird one. Got a cheapo usb card reader for a friend that also has usb ports that go through the pc inside and plug into the back ports of the pc, basically just an extension. The stupid thing is that it has 2 ports but only one usb plug.. so any reasonable load would be iffy. Mate plugged a scanner and a usb stick in at the same time.. smelt burning *lol and called me. My first thought is that the usb port burned out as any device plugged into the front port (on the card reader) would be detected but not recognised. However, unplugging the cable and connecting the device straight to the computer port works fine.. so i can only surmise the extension somehow died? maybe the wires burned out?
I'm thinking the motherboard would protect the port? seeing as all the ports work i can relax that theres no damage apart from the card reader i guess?!
