hi, my mate (yes actually my mate not me) has been done for 68 in a 40 by a van. what you think the outcome will be?

ta, russ

And if less than 2 years it'll be 5 points and a fine. Ive mates who have ben done for worse than that and not had it revoked.

surly it will be 6 points.

i am looking at 6 points and a fine for my 58 in a 30.

i will tell you the outcome a week on tuesday :(

hes had his licence just over 2 years now so hopefully he wont get banned. i feel for him in a way as although yeah fair enough he was speeding its a new van location he was just one of the unfortunate ones who got done before word got around etc

Well nearly 70mph in a 40 is just asking for trouble to be honest.

Unless its one of the weird speed limits where a perfectly good dual carriageway is a 40.

Otherwise I don't feel for him really.

yeah it is one of them weird limits on a dual carrigeway which drops from a 60 to a 40 as the road skirts ROUND a village...not through it. but anyway just wanted to know what sorta spankin he faces. personally i see 6points and a hefty fine comin his way! although he thinks £60 and 3points....told him theres no chance of that.

I was caught a couple years back doing 67 in a 40 on the out skirts of Edinburgh and had a court summons. I ended up just pleading guilty by post and recieved a £200 fine with 3 points. Iwas also caught by a mobile van.

To be honest doing 70 in a 40 is far far too much, theres speeding then theres being an ****hole, that deserves a slap in the face, and probably a lot more.

But you say hes out of his 2 year period, so its looking like 5/6 points and a few hundred ££'s fine.

You say that (and I'm not going to go into the morals of speeding) but for example coming in/leaving Stoke you have to go through Meir Tunnel which drops from 50 to 40. No pedestrians, cyclists etc are allowed in it and it is only a short run with no people around whatsoever. Ok so it's not quite as much of a drop from 70 to 40 but I've seen people doing 80mph in there with no problem.

Would you want to be in that tunnel if he had a blow-out/bit of litter hit his windscreen/dropped his cigarette in his lap at 80mph? I'm not sure I would. The resulting game of car pinball will be pretty unpleasant I reckon.

That curve in that tunnel is good for well over 100mph in a modern car, but the problem is coming out over that rise at a speed greater than 40mph - you don't have time to brake to avoid standing traffic.

Strangely enough speed limits usually have quite sensible reasons for being what they are. In the case of that tunnel it's being able to see to stop as you exit I believe.

If you want to drive at twice the legal limit, join the Police. Or a Track Club.
