I have a PS3 that seems to have gone pop. It load into the XMB ok but any game i play after about 30secs to 2 mins of play the screen will freeze up in a mass of green and black pixels.

I can only assume its been over heating but The power light remains green..

My shop will not replace it as they other case is damaged and they have stated its "out of warrenty due to the damage to the case".. Sony have also told me they wont replace it because of the damage on the case and claim it could have been "miss-used".. (The case actually got damage din the back of the car when it slid around in the boot)

Has anyone tried fixing there PS3 .. and is it worth opening and reseating the heat-sink etc? (ive fixed a few 360's using X-clamps and oven method.. ) but this is my first ps3.

Ideas?

It sounds to me like the heatsink has been knocked out of full contact with the gpu/cell. A decent knock will do that, sounds to me like it sliding about in your car could well be responsible for the problem; the case is pretty sturdy, it must have taken a fair knock to do any noticeable damage

I have heard of people removing the heatsink and applying new thermal paste so it certainly is possible. Tbh you have no other choice so i'd just go for it and open it.

If it is overheating then maybe lots of compressed air to start with, aimed in the grills?

Also there is some sort of Fan test you can do that blasts the fan at full speed which could also force out any dust and other crap?

Wouldn't know where to start with opening it up tbh, so suggesting these non obtrusive methods first.
