Butt Wink

Sort of. It is the posterior tilt of the pelvis as some people get to the deep end of their squat, and there are a variety of reasons for it...

1) Anatomy: the proximal neck of the femur pushes again the rim of the acetabulum if the latter is too deep or angled "incorrectly. This is a physical block which will push the pelvis into posterior tilt.

2) Tight adductor and hamstrings. If a squatter isn't as flexible as they'd like, poor range of motion can cause their hamstrings and adductors to pull against their anchor points and rotate the pelvis. This is not as common as some people think, however...

3) Poor hip capsule mobility and hip external rotation will quite literally fight the rotation of the femoral head in its socket.

4) Poor squat technique (bracing and pattern) causes squatters to slacken their bracing and lean forward for the feeling of depth... Which will lead to Point 2.

But yes, it is an amusing term. :D

What Mr thingy omitted to say, is that anatomy aside if you don't try and overcome it with mobility and so on, long term it can be problematic, so it's important to try and minimise it as much as possible. Some wink is inevitable but minimising it should be prioritised.

Ha, I was obsessed with butt wink when I started squats. It is indeed a funny term, but quite an important consideration that as indicated above can be caused by a range of issues that in turn can potentially lead to long term damage if not corrected. Doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue with low bar squats, although that might just be me.

That's because low bar has no ROM. ;)

And it is basically a core exercise... :D ;)

I think my low bar and high bar ROM's are almost the same! I do have a cycle of high bar's planned, although im getting through my cycle of training with conventional deadlifts in currently :(

It literally took years to fix my butt wink. I can't even remember specifically how but after lock down it was back but just really concentrating on not going to far past depth seemed to help. I'm never going to be an "ass to grass" squater due to poor mobility so I don't try.
