hey guys, so as i say, i went ahead and bought a 4 month old asus sabertooth p67 board, 4gb corsair dominators(brand new) and an ati radeon hd4870. my main uses are light-medium gaming, fifa 12 and gta 4 are the main 2, and web browsing, movie watching and coursework. do you think i should get a 2500k (which by the way a friend is selling for £100) and live with that or wait for ivy bridge and get that seeing as my board will support ivy bridge? i was going to cough up up to 160 for a new cpu to go in the build, but should i wait? surely ivy bridge will have something better to offer for that kind of money?
thanks guys

Get the i5 man,£100! cant argue with that! ivybridge will only be a little bit better and not worth the extra cash if you can buy an i5 for £100! Most of the ivybridge improvements are in the iGPU and not the CPU part of the processor.

thanks man! yeah i thought it was too good to be true, plus he watercooled his rig, and didnt thrash the nuts out of it, so i shant have to worry about it dying on me. plus, you could get an i3 for that price xD
thanks, ima go for the 2500k. peace and good night!

get the i5, even when ivybridge is released, it's quite likely you will be able to sell the 2500k on for a similar price to what you are paying for it.

Sorry to hijack the thread but on a similar note; what should I do? I don't have the option of buying a 2500K for £100 and ideally I would like to get an IB straight off but I can't wait 5 and a half weeks(assuming it comes out in april I'll get it then while I'm away from uni). I was thinking of buying a 2500K, reselling and getting the 2570K but could this be a better temporary solution? If so which should I get? The cheapest 1555 CPU is £30/36~ but I get the feeling it'd go at snail's pace(or I could search the bay rather than buying new).

Yeah great deal that, £100!

@alexs, it's up to you really. CustomPC have a feature this month where they build a sub-£350 PC capable of playing Skyrim @1080p.

They use the Pentium G620 and Paired with a 6850 they achieve FPS of 38-50 which isn't too bad! If you are sure about going IB then the Pentium wouldn't be too bad as an interim measure, if it is for gaming only.

It'd be a money saving measure more than anything. Being a student I want to have the rig as up-to-date as possible without having to spend too much money in the future. I figure if I get the i5-2500K now then sometime in the future, whether that'll be in a month and a half or a couple of years, I'll want to upgrade to the ivybridge before moving on to a new socket(hence mobo and CPU).

Originally, as I mentioned, I had thought about getting the i5-2500K, selling it on at the end of march and then buying the i5-2570K as soon as it came out therefore hopefully avoiding losing too much money and keeping up-to-date with tech. However, it has now occurred to me that this may be a safer option.
