Buy a disc lock

I currently have a 2012 Suzuki Bandit courtesy bike. A couple of nights ago some dirty little ********* snipped the padlock off the garage and had a go at the bike.

The ignition lock barrel is all dented like they tried to hammer a screwdriver in and they cut into the rubber housing of the cables that run from the barrel to the bike (fortunately they didn't cut the wires). They also tried the topbox that the hire company had on there, so that lock is damaged as well.

Luckily all superficial damage and the bike runs and switches on fine. Doesn't sound like the hire company cares, they basically said I might just lose my £50 deposit which, considering they could be nasty about it and claim on insurance (in which case I might be in for a £500 excess), I'm not too bothered about.

It looks like they had a go at starting the bike, then saw the disc lock and left it.

If I had had my Hornet, it would be gone. I never used to lock that when it was in the garage (silly I know) and didn't have a disc lock for it.

So yeah, basically, buy one :)

You can also get ones with built in motion sensitive alarms too i keep meaning to buy one but never get round to it!

Make sure you get a lanyard thing that gos from the lock to the twist grip to remind you about it. I know a couple of people who have set off with one on and it can do a fair bit of damage!

Yeah, tempting to get the Abus detecto. Maybe when I eventually buy a GSXR1000 :)

I have one, it's ok but it's not great value for what it costs IMO. On the plus side the alarm is reliable, none of the false alarm problems you tend to get with other alarmed disc locks.

With the hire bike I keep the keys in the disc lock pouch when I park up, so I never forget as I have to fumble with the pouch to get my keys which reminds me at the same time.

Lanyard a good idea though if you don't have a pouch or are a bit forgetful despite having the pouch in your hand. Or I suppose if you have your house keys etc. with your bike key then you wouldn't want to store them in the pouch.

get some type of garage alarm, chain the bike up to garage wall and stick a disclock on there aswll

that's what id do,might be even worth putting a second clasp/padlock on the inside of the garage door, they cant snip that:D

it'll take you two hours+ to undo them all in the morning but atleast you bike stands a good chance of being there

When ever someone asks me about a chain I always recommend to spend a little extra on a disk lock.

Granted when someone cuts the chain and tries to ride off they can cause some serious damage with the disk lock but its better than having to try and claim a full bike

tbh I should just replace the garage door with bricks and concrete it in, then build a tunnel from my place. Sorted.

I may consider a ground anchor, although would need to talk to the landlord about making holes in the floor for it.

Just ordered the abus provogue 300. The 305 looked a bit small, tiny in fact.

My bikes in a locked metal shed which is behind a locked gate. With an alarmed disc lock and I've also got a shed alarm. Brilliant things shed alarms, mines this:

Just keep the siren in your bedroom and you'll know as soon as someone manages to open the door. Just have to remember to turn it off in the morning :p

My bikes only a cbf125 buts still I don't want scum nicking it!

That alarm looks good, almost like a silent alarm (as far as the thief is concerned).
