I know the refresh is just around the corner and I should wait but I really need a new Macbook. Im running an early 2009 unibody 2.4Ghz 4Gb ram and the problem is it randomly freezes for no reason. It can freeze when just surfing the net or when under load, there is no pattern.

I use the machine mainly for browsing and also for Dj'ing with Traktor so its totally unreliable if I was doing a gig. This brings me on to needing to buy a replacement before the end of May as I have a gig then. I wouldn't want to use this machine for the fear of it crashing on me.

I see the refurb apple store has lots of Macbook's on offer and I really do like the idea of a 17" antiglare before they get dropped. For the small amount of time its out the house it would make a great all rounder for a main machine and the odd trip out.

Question is ill the new machines be out before the end of May, what would you do?

Well a couple of years ago the machine had wine spilt on it, long story short, took it to the Apple store where they replace the logic board and top plate, keyboard etc. The machine was fine but in the past 6 months this freezing issue has started to happen and TBH the machine is old. I find it slow at doing certain tasks and its about time I upgraded. This machine can just become a general browser for the Mrs.

I just don't know if I should wait or buy now.

As always with Apple the source of the problem is a trip to the genius bar and then a hefty bill which I'm not prepared to shell out on an old 2009 core 2 duo.

I have done plenty of reading on forums and stress tested the thing and its definitely looking like a replacement part of some kind.

If the computer comes back to life after it freezes then I'd say the most likely cause is the hard drive. Given the nature of hard drives and the age of your computer I'd look for some smart utility test.

Time for a new drive by the looks of it!

M4 on special today. Just buy it!!!

I have the same MacBook with SSD and I think it's fantastic.

If a new HDD solves your problem an SSD will really refresh your experience with the MacBook.

likwid FTW.

Just bought a 256Gb M4 SSD from Amazon for £192 but had a £100 voucher so all in was £92. Hopefully that should solve the problem and speed the machine up a bit!
