Buy a rtx 3070 or rx 6800, sell in a year or 2?

how much value would a rtx 3070 or rx 6800 in good condition keep, over 1-2 years? based on similar past gpus?

In terms of value, would it be a good idea to buy one of these graphics cards, then sell them replace them with a future gen graphics card, from the rdna 3 / nvidia next gen? Id probably do the same again and look for the 'best value' of that generation too.

Edit - According to this, for high end Nvidia GPUs, they lose about 15-20% of their RRP value per year.

For AMD GPUs like the 5700 or 5700 XT, they lose about 2-9% per year, link here:

Do these figures seem too optimistic, if sold on popular auction websites?

Buy what you need. Pointless buying for future value....

You would end up with more money at the end if you just kept the cash in your pocket and took it out 2 years later as inflation will not make it loose as much at the depreciation of the card.

That's true, but I still have an R9 390, its struggling to play games like Watchdogs: Legion and likely Cyberpunk 2077 too (recommends a RX 590 at 1080p). Warhammer II, I pretty much have to turn down all the settings to get 50-60 FPS.

I would agree that 20% per year seems reasonable - if you bought a 3070 for 500 it would be worth 300 in a couple of years.

Recently AMD cards have been at the cheaper end and there is less depreciation at the lower end.

However it will depend on what the next gen cards do - i.e. turing was not a massive uplift so the 10 series held there value better. The 4000 sereies may blow everything out the water and you card value may tank

Also other external factors i.e. at the minute there is a GPU shortage so S/H prices are higher. This may not be the case when you come to sell.

In short you just cant tell and as what Donnie says buy what you need - you may not want to sell it in a couple of years anyway.

I have a 3080 Aorus Master and I will be selling it asap as a 6800XT Nitro+ SE or a Red Devil comes available, i dont think it will devalue too much to be fair.

I think these cards are over priced but will still be able to fetch near to what you paid for them for a few more months due to scarcity

Swapping a RTX 3080 for a 6800 XT? Why? It will perform worse in some games, like the Witcher 3. It's a sidegrade...

Are you gonna try to make profit on that RTX 3080 while the stock situation is still dire :D

Maybe a RX 6900 XT would be an actual upgrade? I hear these GPUs can clock pretty high. If there's a RX 6900 (non XT) I bet these will be like super overclockable RX 6800 XTs...

I prefer AMD drivers and control suite, ive used AMD since 6xxx series pretty much non stop, im just happier with their hardware... the 6800XT is basically a 3080 without RT, and as ive found out RT is a gimmick anyhow, so im more than happy to stick with the 6800XT for its raster perf.

Dont care about making a profit, just want that level of performance really, also my screen is not Gsync and the 3080 does not play nicely with it. I'll wait til the 6800XT's come into stock and get one, then put my 3080 on the market.

If the "demand" is satisfied. In a year or 2 your 3070/3060ti wil be worth a lot less as the 2nd hand market will be full of them unless they all break.

I think the advantage of buying mid end GPUs now, and selling in a year or 2, is you will probably get +40% upgrade in speed with RDNA 3, say if you upgrade from the RX 6800 to RDNA 3 based 'RX 7800', probably for a similar price to the RX 6800.

And hopefully, the sold RX 6800 would keep its value well.

The performance difference between the 6800 and 6900 XT is only about 20-25%... Not particularly good value, for about double the price.

I think the problem with the RX 6800 XT / RX 6900 XT / RTX 3080 prices is the VAT you pay on those GPUs. Not a problem in some US states ofc.
