Hi People. I'd like some advice please.

Am currently running a phenom 2 (965 x4), ati 7850. I'm seriously thinking of upgrading... but is there anything coming up in the near future which would make me say "damn it, wish I'd waiting a week/month/6 months?

Thanks

Not really.

Skylake just hit and the next E platform is unlikely to make you regret going x99 now.

Pascal is over six months away as well I would have thought.

Good time to buy right now - Skylake just released and Haswell-E well priced. 980ti now very reasonable too.

Go for it OP - stop resisting the Shiny's :)

It's likely to be my last upgrade for Some Time - our first born is proving more expensive than I thought, and (future) upgrades aren't going to be high priority.

So it has to be good.

Go Intel and get Skylake if you're looking for something current and preferably an unlocked processor for overclocking. Based on subsequent generations since Sandybridge there's only been marginal improvements so it'll probably see you through for the next five years or so at a guess.

What resolution you planning on running? GTX970 will do well if wanting good performance at 1080p (or a 390 for that matter) Or stick with your HD7850 for a while and set some cash aside for Pascal.

Definitely a good time to upgrade. Wouldn't say we're at 4K-ready level in the mainsteam yet, but the 980ti has made the 980 drop in price and 1440p is very easily doable these days with a single GPU :)

Intel + Nvidia, you can't go wrong with that combo

What the above have already said really.

It about as good as it gets settle wise.

There will ALWAYS be something new, but a new rig with M2 connected SSD's can absolutely fly.
Intel is where it is at CPU wise, budget dictates GPU.

As for something lasting 5 years? That's always going to be a hard one to call..
