I want the orange box.

I can buy it like a regular game or buy it from Steam.

What do you lot tend to do and why?
I realise that Iwill need to create a Steam account no matter what I do.

I have always bought games from online retailers and didn't look into the Steam website until today, I had no idea it is actually good!

I thought that if steam is down I cannot play HL2 and the like anyway??

Just noticed the Abed odysee games are on Steam, are they updated to run on higher res monitors or will I have to cope with 640x480 or 800x600?

If it is the Orange Box, then I would prefer to get the hard copy of it seeing as the games require Steam anyways, especially since they are comprised of official Valve developed games. It will make it a lot easier to install and saves a lot of download bandwidth.

1. Buy from steam.
2. install game.
3. right click game in game list.
4. backup game content and copy to DVD

best of both worlds.

which ever is cheaper for you. Its both to the same ends as the DVD contains the GCFs that you would get online anyways. Metered bandwidth will also play into this.

I always buy valve games from steam for some reason as you dont usually get manuals with the boxed edition just a leaflet with serial codes on (atleast from what I remember of HL2.

Depends if you want a bidding case collection or not.

i dont know how it is now but ages ago if steam failed to connect a few times it would start in offline mode so you could still play games.

Whichever is cheaper.. But my preference would be to buy the hard copy and register the serial key with my Steam account. Then I can just download the game whenever I wish. :p

I prefer to get it through steam (maybe i am just lazy) especially if it is something like the orange box, though i did, on release, get hl2+css from a retail store, so i have the dvd , but i had to register it on steam anyway.

Basically if you have a slow internet then get the retail version but in my opinion if you get the retail version, your only going to have to update through steam because i doubt it wont be fully updated, id imagine that it would be the release game and then you will have to download all the updates through steam.

id rather buy from steam or direct2drive website, ive had way to many problems with dire copy protection that needs the cd/dvd in the drive at all times, then when its in the drive it keeps telling you in insert the original GRRRRRR

Steam.
I only really buy games from Steam, I do browse the boxers in shops / look on the internet.
Steam is just so much easier.

Steam because it's quick, easy and it damn well works. As far as playing if the steam servers go down, I'd be fine. As long as your games are 100% up-to-date, you can play them in offline mode for as long as you like.

I only play games through Steam now for convenience and speed. Digital distribution is the future.

Regardless whether he buys the Orange Box retail or through Steam, he'll still need to create a Steam account and run the game through Steam. Secondly, the Steam servers don't go down preventing you playing any game (assuming you've fully updated it already). Problems of the past haven't haunted Steam on that scale for a long time now :)
