I want to buy some 2nd hand FPS games but can I still play them online when the previous owner has installed the game with the same CD key and created an online profile?

It really depends on the game to be honest. Some games you can play no problem but others you have to register your CD key to an account/steam and such.

like he said depends on the game...older games you didn't register but just logged in and as long as the account wasn't logged in with the previous user at the same time then all was fine. now with steam it isn't possible to log in and play multiplayer games on the same account.

say you wanted to play mw2 then you would be sick...ok next example.
say you wanted to play css and your friend wanted to play tf2 and they were both your games tied to your steam account then it wouldnt be possible as that account can only be logged in online by 1 user.

if its any consolation i was rooting for u in the ring.

I was thinking specifically COD: MW2 and COD: WaW.

AFAIK, you don't need steam to play these games, so would these be ok?

I guess it all depends whether the original user still plays his account (assuming he can play without the cd). If he doesn't, then I should be able to use the MP all the time?

if its any consolation i was rooting for u in the ring.

:D

No chance with MW2 since that's tied to a Steam account, but you should have no problem with COD WaW though as long as the seller is honest and doesn't use your CD-Key to play online. I bought one second hand and had no issues playing.
