all i really want a laptop for is for browsing and running a few audio/music programs

my budget is about 3-400 (actually as low as poss!) but i'm sure a 2nd hand (possibly gaming) laptop could be had for that, and imagine it'd cope better with the audio stuff too

You could look into your local pawn shop who might even offer it with a warranty, or the clearance outlet of a famous catalogue shop on a famous auction website.
