So my friend is going to go see a car tonight (in 1 hour) and wants some quick tips for buying a car. I have said it is essential tot ake it for a short test drive, to check gears are ok, brakes, steering etc etc

He says that you aren't allowed to becuase your not insured for this... ???

Anyways, what is the best way to do all this and any haggling tips would also be greatly appreciated :D

How old is he?

If he's 21+ with a full license then check out dayinsure.com

He's right that you have to be insured to take the car for a test drive. If he cannot get insured then see if his Dad can come as he might have DOC cover or he can use Day Insure

It's vital that you take the car for a test drive

Check the usual things like fluids, tyres, oil, service history, etc and do an HPI check if you're considering buying it. Check for mayo under the oil filler cap - this usually signifies a HGF which is big money to fix

Don't be put off with some little niggles if you think they can be easily fixed, its bartering material to get the price down ;) If he can't fix it for the price he's got then ask for money off, either way you get a good deal!

Make sure you get the engine up to temperature and that it doesn't get too hot and the fan kicks in. Also make sure that the heater works and blows hot air as if not then your heater matrix is broken. Test all the functions from electric windows to electric sunroof accordingly.

If you can tell us the car then we can be more specific on common faults.

Don't rush at the first car you look at, there is plenty of them around and you'll of wish you'd waited. Afterall, there's plenty of cars and your the one in the driving seat.

BeatMaster :D

EDIT: Oops! Girlfriend still signed in, my bad :(
