I'm considering buying an 360 at the moment but I'm put off by the fact that so many are breaking. Are the new ones being sold now still likely to suffer from the same problems as the older ones or not?

I bought one on saturday, It was the launch ones which sufferd the most proeblems. Newer ones should be fine aslong as you keep them well ventilated.

This may make me sound like a complete idiot but how do you tell whether its a launch one or a new one?

Remember the launch consoles all selling out?

Buying one from a store should get you a newer one, but I've heard nothing about them being more reliable whatsoever.

Every 360 has a production date on the back.

I highly doubt you'd get a launch model now anyway.

My launch one has a white dvd drive face, whereas new ones now have a silver dvd drive face. I got mine off my brother cheap.

I've heard its problems with overheating and if its kept well ventilated it should be fine... But no proof...

If there is any real proof for newer ones being more reliable then can someone post a link? It's just I'm in the same position as the OP but I don't want to just follow someone on the forum's advice then get a dud :o

Did MS not offer to repair all launch machines for free outside of warranty suggests to me that the launch machines might have had some problems, which was fixed for future shipments, no?

You'd presume so, but even the refurbished models fail.

What I'm saying is I haven't seen anything official or conclusive about the newer ones being any more reliable than the old... just seems to be a lot of people talking about it.

Im not too sure but did they not admit to solder joints failing? Im not sure I just got my 360 a month ago and never really followed its early problems.

I was in the same position as you, bought one just over a month ago and absolutely loving it. Wish i had actually bought one earlier, thing is even if it's new it's got a chance of going bust anyway from all the problems i hear. But i have friends with both replaced and non replaced consoles who love it to bits either way.

I took the plunge and think it's worth it, overall we can't make that decision for you, you have to make it yourself. It sounds like your thinking like i originally was and that was your not sure about a 360 and maybe not buying it due to that. I mean it's like your wanting one but looking for a reason not to buy it, ie. using them breaking as one.

If your not fair enough, as all people who buy stuff which have a supposedly high break rate are bound to be a bit concerned about shelling out. But although there is a lot of breakages, there are also a lot that haven't been replaced and are still going strong. It just seems to be luck of the draw and newer consoles doing it a bit less than the older ones.

yeah I kind of wish I got mine earlier, but then again all the cheap 2nd games I am picking up is just brilliant :D

It has a 'MFD Date' on the back.

You have 12 months (or more with extension) if anything goes wrong with it to take it back and swap it for a new one. I'm still on my launch day model and up until 2 weeks ago it had been on for every single day.

While on the subject of taking them back, I bought mine at my local Woolworths, and when buying they said if anything goes wrong they will not replace it at all, it was to go to MS, is that even right or allowed?

Total trash! They're responsible within a year.
