Buying a camera and lens

Firstly I know very little about cameras and lenses.

What is the difference between having a lens and no lens, is it just the amount of light let into the camera or are the cameras themselves that allow for add-on lenses of better quality, and is it only SLR cameras that you can fit a lens too?

I have used quite a few 'ordinary' digital cameras, some apparently of good quality but I never seem to get a decent quality photo.

Any tips on buying a camera and lens, I have seen a budget Cannon EF 50mm lens which has good reviews.

All cameras need a lens*

The difference is that on a compact camera the lens is permanently attached. On a dSLR or compact system camera the lens is removable. This gives you the flexibility to use a lens designed for whatever you're doing.

The Canon 50 is meant to be a very good lens for the price. It is however fixed, it has no zoom adjustment at all. So it isn't ideal for everyone.

The other thing to bare in mind is that different camera manufacturers have different lens mounts. So you couldn't attach your Canon lens to a Nikon camera.

How much are you planning to spend on a camera and what are you expectations and needs?

* Yes I know pinhole cameras make do without, but it would only confuse issues.
