Buying a camera

My dad is looking to buy a new camera so he's been looking around a bit and asked me to do the same. I know absolutely nothing about them so was hoping you guys could help me out
He wants a really good quality camera which will last for a long time. he's narrowed it down to the Nikon D200 and the Nikon D2x. I know the price difference is enormous between the two but if it's worth the money, he's willing to spend it.
personally I think he should go for the D200 because of the price since he's not into photography on a professional level and thats what the D2x looks like its for.

Your thoughts on the two models?

The new Nikon 18-200mm DX VR F3.5 - 5.6 for around £480 is a great starter lens

Best bed is to go for the D200 and use the money saved from bying the D2x to buy a decent lens or two.

Yea, he doesn't mind spending money as long as its good value. Any suggestions as to which one?
