Buying a console in America

It's clearly worth it. The 40gb version is pap anyway. Obviously some people don't know what they're talking about here.

You are allowed 2 suitcases with the airline we are flying with, if it breaks Sony UK will have to fix it, if they refuse I'll take them to the small claims court, I couldn't care less about resale value as I'll actually be using it and if I do end up selling it at some point, who is honestly going to know the difference?

Christ, you are a pessimist aren't you.

Unfortunately, he's actually being quite realistic..
Nikon/Canon Digital SLR's have the same 'regional' warranties that only apply in the country of purchase.... small claims can't help, you just have to write it off, or send it back to the US and pay postage both ways..
And as for 'who will honestly know'.. the console's are regioned, I believe UK DVD's would not play, and BR may become region coded, plus some games may well be as well.. so you'd have to be pretty dishonest not to tell someone..
Then Customs are pretty clue'd up, they know from the packaging and serial numbers where they are from.. my mates missus brought a couple of 360 HD-DVD drives back from the US and got pinged at customs..

I have imported loads of stuff, but I know the risks, but it's usually for stuff I can't get over here..

Maybe the "who will ever know" was a bit flippant so I'll concede that point. It's pretty obvious to customs that I didn't take the PS3 to America and back :D

If it does break and Sony refuse to touch it I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Are you sure all you need is a kettle lead? Is the power supply truly a dual voltage? I have a US PS3, i guess i could look at it later tonight when i get home for you.

All your DVD's and BluRay's will not work as they are regionally coded. Games should be fine so they say...

BUT what of the PSN network.... I beleive that is regional also.. All your downloads will be for US customers only.

Lastly there's customs.. If you are seen bringing back a PS3 through customs they will swipe 17.5% VAT from you then and there, making your cheaper deal not so cheap..

A handheld Id say yeah... A console that wasn't out as yet I'd say yeah... A console that is only going to save you 60GBP cos you can buy it down the road, I say forget it...

I've got a HK PS3, i dont know what voltage it is, its just got a standard kettle lead in it.
Its registered with sony on their website, they sent me the free Casino Royal Bluray to watch on it.
It wont play UK dvd's, but i have a DVD player for that.
Its was £325 in march.

According to the sony site the internal power is dual voltge.

I've got a good DVD player so on the point it's fine, BluRay discs i'll just buy American ones.

I believe you are correct, there is that to consider, although I have no idea how much difference it will make.

Customs will be a chance I'd have to take I suppose, if I got caught i'd have to pay, but on the flipside there is also the chance that I could get away without paying the VAT.

Infact, can someone tell me the difference between the 40gb and 80gb versions? Everywhere I have looked in the UK you can only get the 40gb version, yet in the States you can get either.

You'll be fine with the PSN side, as it bases it's store on the location that you provide when you register.

The big differences between the 40gb and 80gb are : Backwards Compatibility - The 80ggb will have it, but to take advantage you'll need to import FAR superior US NTSC games...., the 40gb has 2 USB ports as opposed to 4, the 40gb has no card reader, the 40gb will not play SACDs...

There may be a couple of other less significant changes, but that's about it :p (excluding the obvious with the hard drive ;)

"they will swipe 17.5% VAT from you then and there"

What if I went to the us for a holiday and took my ps3 with me would i get slapped with the charge while im trying to bring it back??
