Buying a dedicated mini hi-fi for CDs - is this a silly idea?

Hi folks,

Hoping to run this by some other people as it's an idea I've had for a good while but perhaps I'm missing something.

I still buy quite a lot of CDs, mainly from Bandcamp etc in order to support smaller artists/labels that go to the effort of making them in fairly small runs but also to build up little collections of releases from artists I really like, especially stuff that hasn't ever made its way onto Spotify, Bandcamp etc.

My primary way of listening to music - whether it be CD/downloads or Spotify - tends to be on my PC. My entire music collection is on there, and I've got an amp/DAC paired with some Q Acoustics 3010 speakers which do the job nicely. Obviously this means I'm not actually listening to the CDs, they just sit on the shelf gathering dust.

In my living room I've got my TV with a Samsung HW-MS650 soundbar w/ rear speakers; it's great for TV, movies and games but not wonderful for music so I tend not to deliberately sit there and listen to stuff unless I'm cooking, cleaning etc.

If I wanted to add the ability to sit and listen to actual CDs to my living room, would something like a Denon DM41 bundle with speakers (probably the Q Acoustics 3020is as I like my 3010s) be a good bet? Is this overkill just for the occasional CD listening session when most of my TV/gaming use would still be via the soundbar? There's also the Denon N10 which looks a bit more versatile as it does Spotify, wi-fi streaming, internet radio etc but it's significantly more expensive too.

Just wondering if there are other more obvious solutions I might have missed, or if anyone has experience with either of the Denons and can offer any feedback?

Totally with you, sound bars are never that good for music. Using the HW-MS650 soundbar as a centre speaker and the Denons as a main left and right for TV and for music would be a better system all-round.

I bought one of those mini hifi's from Richer Sounds, a Denon AEOL10 I think it's called, it sits under the TV nicely. I've got loads of CD's I still wanted to play but it's got all the streaming stuff built in too, Spotify etc and also plays FLAC/WAV/MP3-4 from a 128gb USB I've attached, it's got a phone app as well as a remote. It's hooked up to 3010s.

That might be the N10 I mentioned! How do you find it? Do you use the internet/network streaming functionality much or is it one of those things that becomes too fiddly without a decent interface?

I went a step further and bought a music server and a hifi amp with a DAC. The server (Innuos Zenith) rips all my music to FLAC/WAV and stores the data internally. It replaced my need for a CD player and having to store 100s of cds in my listening area. It also combines with my AV setup so that I utilise one set of speakers for both films/music.

Probably more than you wanted to spend, but there are options for most budgets.

I'm not in a position to recommend hardware as honestly I do not know the market well enough, but I have a CXC, DAC Magic and Azur 351A amp with Aero2 speakers. In the last few weeks I have listened to more CDs then in a long time and it has reminded me how great they sound. I will actually listen to an album rather than changing all the time, picking this song and that song my my PC.

I completely understand wanting to just have the CD on without other distractions.

One day I will have a study with all my CDs which I can play without distraction. Might also plug in my record player again in the future dream house/world.

Streaming music services have really broadened my music taste, but annoyingly it can also narrow it as you don’t browse properly, don’t listen to whole albums often and playlists are automatically generated of your favourites. Sadly I don’t have as much desk time to discover new music. Listening to a whole album with no distractions is a lovely thing.

I would suggest that you scour the classifieds and see if you can grab a nice CD player and stereo amplifier second hand. Ignore digital features which you can get via your PC. This is for leisure time!

Depends on the space you've got I guess. The Denon systems are ok, I've had a couple of them over the years, from the relatively cheap modern ones, to one of the higher end separate stacks. Not really going to bring the best out of your CDs though.

I just upgraded my amp to a Naim Nait and was listening to CDs til late last night from my ancient Arcam CD62, and playing through my old Quad 11L speakers and they sounded bloody amazing (even though that CD player is definitely not doing the amp justice). If I was making a small setup I'd definitely try one of these small amplifiers like the amptastic.

We're in the golden age of CDs now where you can get quality kit that's not too old for cheap. Get one before the hipsters take over!

I think I'm going to get an amptastic to drive a couple of the B&W M1s I'm not using at the moment, as my PC speakers.

Honestly, it's been excellent. The app works well, it's not fiddly at all, Spotify, Soundcloud etc are all great with the usual mobile/tablet interface, all the radio stations are there (radio 6 mainly for me). I have a large digital collection that I bought mainly from Bleep and that all works perfectly from an attached USB, album art etc all there, all searchable.

I just wanted something compact that fits in the TV unit that does everything and sounds great. I really can't be bothered with separates and the sound it produces is far louder than I'll ever really need without getting into a fist fight the neighbours, this is with Q Acoustic 3010s.

It also does multi room zoning if you have wireless speakers so you can set it up as Living Room/Office etc.

Thanks both, yeah that's kind of what I'm trying to achieve. Probably sounds a bit pretentious in a way but I want to have that experience of deliberately choosing a CD off my shelf and listening to it, rather than either trying to find it in a vast music library or just sticking on a Spotify playlist or whatever.

Unfortunately due to space constraints it would probably have to be one of the Denon-style mini CD/amp units (or something of equivalent dimensions), I've got space on the bottom shelf of my TV unit to put it next to my BT TV box and the speakers could go on stands either side (the soundbar sits on top in front of the TV as you'd expect), it's really the only place I can put it in the room. Trying to keep things as simple as I can rather than going for various separates. If I was going to use it for TV audio too I'd definitely be more inclined though, but the soundbar is fine for that.

Awesome, that sounds like it might be the sort of thing I'm looking for and a bit more versatile than the other Denon I was looking at. I'll take a look at some reviews, thanks!
