Buying a domain?

Hi guys.

We're interested in buying a certain .co.uk domain, and checking the company who owns it, the company is dissolved.

Just wondering what the process would be to try and buy it?

Cheers,

Mal

If the company no longer exists, contact Nominet.

If the company is in admin/liquidation contact them.

Why? That would make no difference. The domain has been bought for at least two years. Check when it expires and hope no one renews it.

If it expires then they still have a 75 day period where it is still registered. I have just bagged my .com one through the same process. It expired in December, and only just recently came up with pending deletion (Which means it could be re-registered).

Even though it's close to expiring as someone else has already said it may still be re-registered at expiry and even if it does expire it will probably be gobbled up by one of those companies that just buy expired domains for the sheer hell of it.

Best bet is still to try to find some contact from the company, you may wish to look into one of those auto buy sites that will register it asap for you when it does expire.

If renewal date is 22nd Feb, do I need to look at just past midnight on the 22nd, or just past midnight on the 23rd then?!

Cheers

ps, the website doesn't resolve to anywhere at the moment.

Domain registrars will wait at the ready for you for a fee, they usually call this service back-ordering. I know GoDaddy offer it, saves you having to set a date in your diary.

Neither.
A domain name on expiry goes into another status giving the owner 30 days to pay.
There is then another 30 day period where Nominet attempt to get hold of the current owner.
Only after both those stages will the domain be deleted.
On deletion, if the name is even vaguly interesting one of the "domain snatching" services will register the domain approx. 1 second after it is deleted.

Sorry to make it all sound like doom and gloom, but getting hold of expired domains yourself is near impossible.
There are companies out there that will attempt to snatch the domain on your behalf, but expect to pay for that service.

Agreed. It's so annoying! TagNames is the worst. They seem to have a large portfolio and aren't willing to sell anything.

Is there any information in the whois records for the domain about contacts for it? Nowadays there may not be as people tend to have the data obscured by their registrar but it's worth checking ...

Not so long ago you could have went after the site yourself or get someone to go after it for you for a fee. But what would happen a lot of the time was the current user (being not so clued-up as the internets was still new to them) let it accidentally expire. The new site owner would then say they'll return the site for a fee. There was some very big payouts I think.

But now the 'expiry period' is much longer so i think your best bet is to contact the owners/solvency direct.

I'm trying to get a domain at the moment and it's registered by a retarded holding who want $1000 for it. It's not even popular ffs.
When I first got jonny69.co.uk the company wanted a lot to renew it. I decided to let it expire so I could just re-buy it with someone else but it ended up with a holding company who wanted £Millions for it. I think I left it about a year before it became available again.

We're trying to buy a domain at the moment.
The owner has it listed at Sedo for sale - $250.
So I offer this...nothing...no response.
I up the bid to $500 and put the message "Lets talk, you want $250 I'm willing to give you $500".

Last response I had from them was:
Domain plus two mis-spells - €40,000

Of course I've told them where they can get off and I doubt we'll be getting this domain name.
They will of course also never allow it to expire.

But there, at the end of the day that is how the world of domain names goes and you have to live with it.
