Buying a HG612

All,

Think I've decided that my best route forward is to buy an HG612 (master socket behind the front room TV) then I can cable to router (more choice than with built in VDSL modem), and also sounds more reliable and upgradable.

Anyway, where is the best / safest way to buy a HG612 3B - some on eBay , but anything to be aware of? Can they be banned / locked out?

Thanks

i recently purchased a replacement from there for my ECI hg612.

i unlocked it easily and its been running fine so far.

i dont think they can be locked or disabled in anyway.

all you need to know is how to set it up with your isp, im with sky so i did not need to mess around with any settings, but im not sure its the same with all isp's...i may be wrong

I bought a spare HG612 3B version of ebay for £7 to use as a spare. They can't be locked by ISP's so there is nothing to worry about. Be weary of sellers selling them for extortionate prices just because they have a f/w making them compatible with G.INP enabled green boxes. You can get the f/w yourself and flash it.

Don't bother paying extra for an unlocked one either, they unlock extremely easily.

Only thing to bare in mind is that they get extremely warm, this is normal so don't think it's broken once it's been on for a few days :p

Cool - thanks folks

So, if I get one, how much is there to configure? (BT infinity), any instructions?

Just plug and play. All the ISP details will be set on the router instead of the modem. For BT Infinity it's PPPoE, username [email protected] and password is blank, but if the router doesn't like that, something like 12345 will do.

i picked mine up for £14.

there were some going for £17 + delivery. i think upto £20 is good, they were listed as brand new aswell.

2nd hand and used should be less.

Just stuck a HG612 3B on my parents connection whilst using the HH. Massive difference. Their connection before was inconsistent, now it's robust.

Looking at purchasing one of these myself. I am little bit confused with how they connect into the network. Am right in thinking it is BT Socket > RJ11 > HG612 > WAN Port on HH5 using CAT5e?

@ Steve, yes thats right.

If you wish to unlock it for stats ext then you also put a cable from LAN2 to a spare normal LAN port on your router / switch.

Thanks for the response. I am bidding on a few now on a well known auction website. Is it really as simple to unlock as people make out? I am presuming there are numerous how-to videos on youtube?

Its really easy its essentially;
1) Set your network card on your pc to the stattic address 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0
2) connect LAN2 on the modem to your PC
3) Make sure the modem is OFF.
4) With the reset button pressed turn the modem ON
5) Keep the reset button pressed while it boots (for 5-10 seconds)
6) Open a web browser and go to 192.168.1.1
7) You will be given a page where you can upload firmware, simply upload the firmware you downloaded
8) Thats it really, after the modem restarts your modem is flashed (can take a couple of mins), if you go to 192.168.1.1 you will be given a login page default is admin for both user and pass. If your network is running anything other than 192.168.1.1 so e.g. 192.168.0.1 or something then go to the basic LAN page and change the IP to somethign that matches with your network. Thats it.

Connect the Internet cable, connect LAN 1 to your routers WAN and LAN2 to a normal LAN port.

You may also need to switch off your AV for this, as ESET smart security, for example, won't let you connect to the firmware update page (step 7 in the list above) of the modem unless it is disabled.

Thank you very much for taking the time out to write all that. I won one of these devices earlier and waiting on delivery.
