Buying a Mac Book Pro in the US.

A mate of mine is in the US for about another week. He's seriously tempted to buy a 17" MBP before he flies home.

Apart from the obvious plug change are there any other issues with buying a Mac Book Pro in the US with regard to the power brick (I'm assuming they are auto switching between 110v and 240v these days), and the warranty (ie if it goes bang will Apple honor the warranty in the UK/Europe?).

Answers appreciated.

If customs catch you with that then you're gonna have to pay a hefty import tax.

I believe that ^^ reads along the lines of "it's over £250 (allowed limit) then you need to pay a hefty sum", might want to double check though. Most people just use HE discount on these items.

Best bet would be to buy the laptop, throw the box and pack the accessories (cables, manuals etc) in to hand luggage.

Then just order a spare 85W Magsafe power charger in the UK when you get back at http://www.apple.com/uk/thestore

Buy it, carry it back as hand luggage, post the box if you want to keep it. Apple's warranty is world wide on all their portable products... you will have no issues there

thanks, i figured he'd know about the import tax and not to fly with the box as he visits the us quite a bit. his main concern was the warranty.

I bought my 15" just over a year ago when I was on holiday. Binned the box and brought it back in hand luggage and copied some files and emails off my iPod over to the Mac to make it look used. No problems with the warranty (has been used). A couple of mate's have also done the same since.

The charger works fine with a plug adaptor or just substitute a UK figure-8 lead for the US one.

If you can get HE discount in the UK then it's worth doing that because of the substantial saving on the AppleCare.
