Hey all,

As the thread title says im buying a PS3 next week (whoop whoop :D) which will be my first console since the PS1.

Anywho, im a tad confused about the display options. It seems a bit sad to spend all that cash on the PS3 just to play it on a fishbowl tv that only supports 640x480 or whatever. (Buying a HD/LCD tv isnt an option, as im extremely poor. :p )

So i wanna try and run it thru my PC monitor. Which would give me these options (that im not sure will even work):

- HDMI to DVI adaptor

- HDMI to DVI to VGA adaptor :o

- AV/Composite/Whatever (3 leads - Red, Yellow, White) to VIVO

Which leaves me with a few problems.

- I dont even know if the 40gb version comes with a HDMI cable (will research one that later)

- How do i get around changing what my monitor is plugged into? From pc to ps3 and vise versa. (The back of my PC doesnt have the best access)

- Will i even be able to play at higher resolutions on my monitor than my fishbowl tv?

Regardless of the answers, im still buying one. :D

Thanks for the help!

Yeah, i thought about a 360.. for about 6 seconds. Not too keen on em really, i hate the shape of the control pad, and the failure rate is a tad scary, although i think that was fixed with recent versions of the console? Plus there's some PS3 games that i just HAVE TO have, and they're PS3 exclusives. :)

And err yeah, i somehow doubt my monitor is HDCP compatable. Its one of Hanns-G's first 19inch TFT's... which were a budget model, so i dont think it'll support it. :(

When i said i stopped thinking about the 360 after 6 seconds, i didnt mean it literally. I actually thought about it for atleast 8 or 9. :p

But seriously, i dont like the 360 controller. I dont like its shape, i dont like its layout, it's bulky and it doesnt feel right to me. Maybe it's because im too used to the playstation style pad, i dunno, either way, i dont like it.

And no i dont JUST have to play PS3 only games, but there isnt one single 360 only game that i want. There is however a few PS3 exclusive games that i do want... and the rest of the games i want, have been/will be released on both machines.

Oh and free multiplayer is extremely important for me. I already pay for an internet connection, so i dont really want to pay all over again just so i can actually use it the way i want to.

:)

Well they havent really, cause nobody knows the answer at the moment. :p

Hopefully we'll have more news Monday when rp2000 recieves his spanky new cable.

People can talk about what they like in here, doesnt phase me in the least, aslong as i have the answer i need by the time i get my PS3 (trying to sell me on the idea of a 360 is a waste of time) then i really dont care. :D

Nokkon, i have taken everything into mind, and again you took me literally when i said i thought about the 360 for 8 or 9 seconds. =/

There is nothing about the 360 that stands out for me, besides being able to hook it up directly thru VGA cables, which isnt a mind changing bonus imho. There's no 360 exclusives that i want, i dont like the control pad - regardless of your opinion about its functionality and how gimmicky you think the sixaxis is, you have to pay a sub to play online (A mistake on MS' part in my opinion) and there's no blu-ray. Although im not buying the console for its blu-ray/media capabilities, it's nice to know it's all there in the PS3 if i decide to give it a go.

@ Nanoman. Is there a component to vga adaptor? And if so, will i be able to force it to use a higher resolution? The whole problem i have with fishbowl tvs is that they're low res and i can see the scanlines or whatever you call them, even when watching tv/dvds, so im sure i'll also see it with a PS3. Which is a shame. :(

Regardless of how much money they make with Live, i still think they have a cheek charging a fee for it. Yes, they provide a service and have the right to charge a fee, but its not out of MS' financial capabilities to actually give the buyers of their consoles something for free. It doesnt matter how different Live is from PSN, PSN still works and it's free. And now with "Home" on the way, its only gonna improve... and it'll still be free.

I dont like the shape/size/feel of the pad, and i dont like how the sticks are in different areas of the pad. One in the middle, and one off to the side where the D-pad should be... it just doesnt feel right. Im used to having both sticks in the middle.

IF you ask people what console for games, the majority will say Xbox360

Well that's fine for them. They have the right to have that opinion. But you have to realise that their opinion isn't MY OPINION. And seeing im the one that'll be coughing up the cash for it, i'll stick with my own opinion on the matter, thanks. :)

I do like that little switching box. Price isnt too big of an issue to me, its just availability in Aus is usually limited. :(
