I want something for the living room that will act as a streamer for online services like Amazon Instant Video, Netflix and NOWTV.

I had been considering getting a Roku 3 although that doesn't have Amazon Instant Video. Someone mentioned getting a PS3 as it is the only thing that actually covers all three services.

I have looked online and I can get a pre-owned PS3 for not a lot more than the ROKU. The Roku is £99.

If I buy a PS3 what version should I buy? I am veering towards something preowned from a high street shop who will at least provide 12 months warranty cover. What should I be aware of if buying this?

Personally I'd buy one of the newer models. Hard drive size doesn't come into it really as they can all be upgraded by removing a screw, pulling the old one out and shoving a new one in.

Steer clear of the old phats as they're all ticking time bombs of YLoD.

Between the Slim and the Superslim which should I go with?

I have read all sorts of conflicting stuff online. And how reliable are they? Is it worth considering a second hand one from a private seller (MM here for example)

Either should be fine. Had my second hand super slim for a couple years now and it's been fine. Upgraded to a 500GB HDD seems a bit pointless since you can't install quite a lot of disc games but always there if I need it.

The Fifa WC2014, 12GB bundle seems to be available for about £130 online. Veering towards that for the satisfaction of a new console without any ick factor.

I bought a Superslim off of the MM and it's been fine. The fan is noisy though as it gives off a sort of whiney noise when it ramps up. Apart from that I think they're good machines but bear in mind the 12gb models don't come with the HDD tray or indeed an HDD.

The Slims are sturdier machines and better built but I'm not convinced that the long term reliability of them is any better than the Phats although I've never owned one.

I'd say just get the Superslim if you can put up with a bit of fan noise. If not get the other one.

Id get the Slim and went out of my way to get one when the Superslim came out - its just not as cheaply made, nor as ugly. You wouldnt go much wrong with either though considering your requirements...

ps3ud0

I might pop into CEX in the morning and get one.

I do most of my gaming on my PC. Any games (don't have to be new in any way) that might be fun for my wife and I to play in front of the TV from time to time?

I'd be going with a 2nd hand slim from Game tbh, 12 month warranty too :)
Not as noisy or as flimsily built as the superslim.

Oh...

buy the last of us !

I'm going to go to CEX. I am getting rid of my NAS and have some HDDs. CEX will give me a decent price in trade in credit.

Are most games on the PS3 in 1080p with 5.1 sound?

Bitstream is better than DTS anyway though, that way your AV receiver is getting the audio clean without any prior processing.

Was there many games that did bitstream though? I remember setting it on uncharted I think but most games just have a choice of headphones or speaker mode!

Most PS3 games do LPCM it seems, which is superior to using any given Dolby or DTS option. The 360 was rather limited in that aspect by mainly only ever doing Dolby Digital, and it was certainly noticeable.

I have this purchased and setup now.

I am getting error messages with BBC iPlayer. It loads but when I try and play something it says there is an error and to try again later.
