I want to buy a ps3 today and I would like backwards compatibility because my PS2 has recently stopped working. I can get a new 40gb or a used 60gb with 2 games for £350. But is the 60gb UK PS3 better for backwards compatibility than a UK 40gb? Can the 40gb do it at all?

Yes, get a 60GB PS3, as the 40GB can only do PS1 games, not PS2 games. There are lots of other benefits to owning the 60GB console too, like more USB slots and memory card readers and such.

The GFX chip that did the backwards compatibility for PS2 games was stripped out of the 40Gb model.......I don't think it plays PS2 games now.......PS1 yes but not PS2.....I may be wrong though? :o

You might struggle, they don't make the 60gb one any more.

sad but true

60gb is about a rare as rocking horse doo doo.

If you want a PS3 that plays PS2 games properly, you'll need to wait for the replacement model, likely to be the same as the 60gb PS3, but with an easier to obtain (for sony) 80gb HDD.

Can you stream videos/music over a network with a PS3?

yes ! and very well too. The latest 2.10 firmware update for the PS3 added Div Xand WMV support. I can now stream just about every film / movie ive got as it even seems to pick up Xvid as Divx !!

so i can playback some Xvid, and all WMV and most Div X movies. They stream with no problems either, and using TVersity as my streaming device, i can even store them locally and download them onto the PS3s HDD !!

combine that with the inbuild Blu Ray player, and the upscaling DVD player and the ability to store photos / music its a killer home entertainment device, before you even start mentionning it can play games.

Hmm, I've just paid about £75 building a htpc (had spare parts), starting to wish I had put it towards a PS3 as I'm not recording anything only streaming vids/music.
Still, the PS3 price will only go in one direction, I'm definately thinking of getting one for the lounge now (the misses will go mad, haha)!

As far as i know yes, but when i'm not sure

Yes they will be in the UK as soon as all the 60gig stock is depleted.. Over here in the US you can no longer get a 60gig only 40 and 80's... 80gig being PS2 backward compatible..

$399 for a 40gig and $499 for an 80gig... if you are thinking about importing one...

I'm trying to decide if its worth waiting to buy a new 80gb version or not and how long I'm going to have to wait.
