Hi everybody

I'm looking at buying a 220 Turbo and wondered if any of you knew of common faults I should look out for, at what point major parts should be replaced etc...

The car I've found is an M reg targa with 48000 miles, it's up for £1250. Any advice would be great.

cheers for any help,

steve

My mate had a modded one that went through gearboxes every couple of weeks, but he was running a lot of power!!
Had lots of alarm/electrical gremlins too, usually centred around the rover alarm system.

currently helping a mate rebuild his (again!)

watch out for issues with the alarm as has been said, its had to be rest a few times. would have to say that other than that, nothing really springs to mind as being wrong with it. no serious rust, it has running problems.. but it was bought as a non runner so thats to be expected..

ask away on rovertech.net they should be able to help you out with more details.

oddly, was removing a 220 box last night and managed to drop it on my mate under the car.. luckily no damage.

Youch!! I have twice been underneath his car, with a mate trying to offer up new gearboxes with him leaning over from above. They are not light!! :D

Oh, he had rust issues on the rear arches on his, but dunno if thats common or not.

I had a gearbox last 2 yrs running well over standard power.

It's more to do with how you treat them, wheelspins are the major killer. Other than that though there are no major issues.

Standard gearboxes are ok if the car is completely standard. Fit a boost controller and set the boost to 12psi, and you'll kill the box very quickly if you treat it rough.

After 6 months of abuse, mine is on its last legs... it whines, it leaks oil etc etc. If you go easy on it in 1st gear, you're much less prone to have problems but if you do want to drive it hard, it's completely pointless to keep fitting standard boxes.

Just get the box rebuilt with steel caged bearings and never have to worry about it again.

There are loads of threads on here with a list of problems. Try searching for "Rover Turbo" and see what comes up.

As above, avoid leathering it in first gear and you'll be fine.
My 'box has whined since the day I bought it and still whines now (about two years on) :) Every one I test drove whined so don't be overly put off if this is the only 'flaw'.
