Has anyone taken their phone abroad, especially South Africa and purchased a SIM to use on the networks overthere?

I'm trying to find out tariff rates and other details (international calls, local calls, cross-network rates, and if 3G/GPRS is available) but don't know which telecom providers out there supply these SIMs.

Any help would be appreciated.

I do it all the time, I pick up a local pay as you go sim card for a few quid from a 7/11 or mobile phone shop. I have found international calls on foreign sim cards to be much cheaper some times as low as 5-10p a min in local currency.

never done it from SA but as long as your phone is sim free you should be fine.

Yep, phone is SIM free.

Thanks for the info, and cheers for those links, just what I needed!!
