Buying a used item without a receipt

Looking to purchase an item that doesn't have a receipt. The buyer bought it from eBay and is now selling it. The seller is local, he's telling me the item has a 2 year warranty under EU law and has been registered to the manufacturer. If the item develops a fault can I contact the manufacturer for a repair?

I have owned several models of this scope and never had an issue. It's basically half price and the saving is massive, it's 4 months old. Probably worth a punt...
