Ok my birthday tomorrow and I'm seriously thinking about this.

It seems to have all the latest games for it as well.

But .... I don't have an LCD tv will the games still play on a normal telly?

I don't expect it to be as good as Xbox360 or PS3 but does it have an online feature? And can it play films like DivX etc?

Games will play fine on a normal tv. It can't watch divx movies or anything like that...yet. It does have online features, future games will have more online features. But straight out the box online features involve the virtual console, internet and various other channels.

The Wii doesn't output HD like the 360 and PS3 do, so in fact running it on a standard definition telly is the way to get best picture :p

As Zefan says, an HDTV is wasted on the Wii if it doesn't upscale 480p well.

On a SDTV you'll want to use component 480p (if your TV supports it) or failing that an RGB scart.

Just remember to check the back of your TV for RGB component jacks. If it has them then you'll want to pick up a component cable the same time you buy the Wii.

edit:

Have you thought about what games you'll be getting?

It's amazing how much of a price hike there still is on the current stock given its coming up on a year since it's release .... thats saying something if you still can't get hold of the console @ RRP a year after release date !

Glad I got mine @ RRP back in december last year ! :D

And yea don't worry about the image - just try to use component if you can as thats a great improvement over composite !!!!

The only true online game at present is Mario Strikers, however that plays really well and is generally lag free so it's a good starting point for nintendo.

That's the thing, you can pick them up for RRP no trouble, I don't understand why people are panicking and paying way over the odds for them.

I already have one, but my ex announced my son wants one for christmas, and as im not prepared to pay £250-£350 for a £179.99 console, i've bought one from germany instead.

But I was going into Toshi Station to pick up some power converters... had plenty in stock when i got mine a month ago, i didnt realise they were still in short supply

No competitors please ~ Luke.

The wii is awesome :) There arn't loads of awesome games out for it yet though but there's enough to be getting on with... Zelda, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3 for example and Super Mario Galaxy is almost upon us too :)

2 games that will last you untill January or longer i imagine at the going rate.

Metroid Prime 3
Zelda : Twilight Princess

They will last you ages untill Super Smash Bros/Mario Kart comes out, their are other great titles but im not listing them all again ^_^

Wii is great but ive recently been replaying a few games on my new 42" 1080p TV and although its great playing the games on such a big screen it did look better on my old 24" CRT screen.

I thought the component cables came with the Wii as standard?

Mine did.

It's only Composite cables that come with the Wii as standard - Yellow/White/Red phono plugs. (Yellow - Composite Video, White - Left Audio, Red - Right Audio)

For a better picture you'll need to buy either the RGB Scart lead or Component lead (Red/Green/Blue phono plugs & Red Audio/White Audio phono plugs)

The Wii only comes with a composite cable (with scart adapter) in the box. If that's what you've been using then I'd expect the picture to look comparativley crap to your old CRT. Do yourself a favour and get a component cable.
