I'm getting a new monitor next week and I've been looking at a few. I'm just not sure what I should get and what to look for. I'm a bit clueless when it comes to screens.

What I want is a 24" monitor for gaming, LED would be nice. I'm not really fussy about HDMI, vga and dvi will do me. This seems an obvious choice, BenQ G2420HDBL but this is more like what I was looking to spend IIyama Prolite E2472HDD

As far as I can tell, the only difference is HDMI and response time, is it worth the extra 30 squids? Are all screens going to be about the same unless I drastically increase the budget and get an ips panel? Also any other suggestions in this range are very welcome.

I fancy the benq, it's price is brilliant. I'm just not experienced enough to know if it's worth going for more expensive one. Between 2ms and 5ms, will I notice the difference and is it worth getting HDMI even if I have no use for it just now. Will the screen be "better". I've not a clue.

I was a little worried about the monitor having 5 ms isntead of 2, but I cant notice anything wrong with games and films etc. If you have no use for HDMI now then deffinitely get it. Even if it did have HDMI would you use it instead of DVI on the computer?

The benefits of LED backlighting are thinner, less power hungry monitors, right? In "real world" use, how does it affect the image quality? It's really my main concern.

Cant tell you whether LED is better because my 2nd monitor is completely different but the BenQ G2420HDBL definatly gets my vote.

I'm also interested in whether or not to go for the G2420HDBL or the E2472HDD. The 2ms sounds more attractive, but tbh I've researched around and a lot more people seem to say that you won't see a massive difference between 2 - 5ms, but some say you can notice it...But at the same time, I've also read other forums where people have purchased monitors with 2ms, but it seems to be un-true when actually playing/watching.

I currently own a samsung sync master 205bw, and that has 6ms, and I haven't noticed any kind of blur when playing fast paced games. So really, I think as long as the response time is within 5ms, and the monitor is generally a good brand (which I think benQ and samsung definitely are) then we both shouldn't worry too much.

What monitor did you go for in the end?

I really wouldn't be concerned about LED backlighting tbh, with the current edge-lit implementation the only real benefits are reduced power usage, heat and required thickness - just as you point out. The image quality is not any better.

As for 2ms vs 5ms - it really doesn't matter, both are more than fast enough to eliminate any visible ghosting in fast paced games. A separate, but equally important number to look out for is input lag (ie monitor processing lag) as this can adversely affect your gaming (and general use) if the figure is too high. Unfortunately, this figure is not shown on product pages and only found in in-depth monitor reviews.

Personally, I would suggest having a look at this monitor (review here) but if you really want a 24 incher the G2420HDBL is the one i'd go for.

I really wouldn't worry out HDMI or the lack of it. If you ever want to plug in a console you can pick up a HDMI - DVI adapter for a few quid.

OP said £180 budget, £235 is pushing that a tad surely! That said, personally I'd save up extra cash and go for the better monitor.

Aye, it is certainly pushing it (~£50) but if he can afford it he will be very happy he did. If he can't then the BenQ is still a good bit of kit.
