I'm needing for some advice. I'm looking at replacing a 7yr old Dell laptop that my Mum uses as her main computer with a MacBook this Christmas.

I think I've decided on getting her a 13" MacBook Air from the refurb store as I think it's the best fit for her needs:

Web Browsing
Email
Word/Excel
Basic Photo Editing

The MacBook Pro is overkill and the 12" MacBook I think is a little to small for her to use as a daily machine. I 'm keeping my eye on the refurb store and have noticed a few 2016 models pop up with the i5/8GB and i7/8GB configurations. As she is likely to keep this for probably 5yrs or so does it make sense for me to pay a little extra now and get the more powerful i7 model?

Just buy a laptop with linux, why spend three times the price on a laptop that basically is just a very basic use? Or you could buy a chromebook!

I forgot to add that I'm using a friends employee discount.

I've been considering that route, but with the slight reduction from the refurb store and the extra discount I think it's worth looking at a MacBook Air as it'll last her longer.

Just need advice if the i5 or i7 would be best?

Im using an i5/128gb Macbook Air and its perfect for email, browsing youtube etc.I got mine from the refurb store for £629 and it was like brand new.
I would try and get an 8gb ram model over the 4gb tho.
It's a great size and weight and long battery life it will be a huge difference from her ancient Dell :D
