Buying AMD for Gaming

I've got a HD samsung monitor so I'm highest res possible can't remember what that is.

1920x

So with AA the CPU will have a very minor effect on framerate.

Rule of thumb, there will be a few conditions where the top end CPU's will pull out a few frames but in reality you'd not notice it.

It's the main reason I've kept my Phenom II for so long and upgraded my GPU instead.

Well if this is correct then you should be able to use a Hex, but be warned the PMW on that mobo is not the best and my blow.

Thanks. I'll google that failure point, I wasn't aware there was an issue!

I might just hold off and upgrade my GPU instead (for reasons posted above).

I ran my Phenom II at 4GHz for quite some time and reduced that down to 3.5GHz because there was no performance difference, that you'd notice, and it obviously puts less stress on the system and uses less power.

Thank you very much.

Thank you Final8y as well.

I'm definitely going for the 1090t or 1100t. I just don't know which.... 1090t is cheaper but i've got the cash so the 1100t is tempting. Can anyone give me a really good reason other than money to go for the 1090 over the 1100 or visa versa?

I blown that mobo with my quad but i was putting lots of juice through it.
Besides that, using 4x3870 on it was great.

No. :)

But what are have you got now ?

I've got a big hole where a processor should be

LOL. so you already have the mobo.

Sabertooth 990FX maybe more tricky with a Thuban hex when Ocing as the Bios is turned for BD, but check to see if it gets better with the later BIOS.

Hmmm that concerns me! Really not sure whether to take the plunge and order the Hex or find another way round my situation

Didn't think they were going to hammer them. I planned on buying a 8150 to put in my gaming rig but from what I've seen the 1090T will be much better for gaming.

In BF3 which is meant to be 'multi/many-core' ready the Bulldozer actually pulls out a comfortable lead.

It's also there or thereabouts in the other gaming benchmarks.

Considering you can get the 8120 for ~£160 I think people are being rather harsh on AMD.

Hmmm I'm finding it very hard to get clarity on exactly how good or bad the Bulldozers are.

As I said before I'm just looking for a good AMD processor for gaming and I've built a good rig around it, I've got a GTX 580 gfx card. But I'm stumped for which AMD processor to go for. One minute the 1090t seems the absolute no brainer and then it's the FX6100 and then even the 8150 is being clawed back from the brink and presented as a good performer.

If you're going AMD then a 1090 or 8120 are not only very similar in price but also performance. Personally if I were sat with an AMD board I'd go for the newer tech just because it's got more cores and BF3 has shown it can be taken advantage of.

On the flip side, where the apps are less multi-core friendly the performance deficit is so shallow that you'd simply not notice any difference in day-to-day use.

IMO of course.

What stops you going for the 8150 other than price?
