Thinking of buying an SV650s as a first bike. None of my friends/family bike so I'm a short on information regarding buying one.

Been looking for an SV650s, 2004 or later for ~£2-2.5K, been looking on AutoTrader, PistonHeads and eBay for a while.

Currently watching these 4 auctions:

2004 SUZUKI SV 650 SK4 BLUE

2006 Suzuki SV 650 SK6

2007 SUZUKI SV 650 SK6 SPORT FULL FAIRING BLUE

2007 SUZUKI SV 650 SK6 S BLUE

Any thoughts on the above auctions, others to look at or general hints and tips on what to look for in an SV would be much appreciated

Edit: I live near Derby and my parents near Reading

Not really any help, but I looked at an SV650S as a first bike and for some odd reason my R6 was a couple of quid cheaper to insure with motorcycle direct.

Cheaper to insure and tax as the SV goes over the 599cc bracket even though it has half the power of most 600 sports.

Still a cracking bike though.

Muh, brakes were ok for me, but I never went mentalist with it. If you are heightely-challenged I think 03 or 04 was a tall year for the bike hehe. (I'm sure the first year of pointy was taller than subsequent). They do say the front dives quite a bit too. Again it never annoyed me, but then it's the only real bike I've had.

As for hints and tips, I'm not too sure other than check fixings etc for rust as I understand they go quite quick if not looked after. Check for fairing damage etc.

I may think of other non-useful stuff later!

Check that tyres and chain and sprockets have plenty of life left in them. Chain and sprockets can cost £80 to replace and a decent set of tyres fitted (if purchased online) can cost £140.

Aside from that there isn't much to look out for on them. Quite solid and reliable bikes.

If the suspension is too soft for your liking it can be sorted for under £100 and the brakes are fine if you fit a set of decent pads (I use SBS sintered pads on my race bike which from ebay are £36 for all the front pads).

Think it cost me more like £150 to sort the suspension on mine, but it handled fairly well after that (standard suspension just bounced round corners far too much for me). They rust/pit fairly quickly, so keep them clean.

Only reason I sold mine was the lack of power and wanting a "proper" sports bike rather than a commuter bike pretending to be one :p . My new bike has about twice the power and handles better than the SV ever did, straight out of the box! :D .

As above really, check all fasteners, etc (Suzuki fasteners appear to be made from cheese:D)
Check for brake binding, fork pitting, excessive smoke, crash damage.
Just the usual stuff you would check for on a bike.

Thanks for the pointers :)

I'm 6' with a 34" inside leg so a tall bike isn't too much of a problem. I'll Google for some info on checking chains and sprockets for wear
